Synthetic Transmission Fluid
BioFlo FS TO-4 Fluid is a full synthetic transmission fluid formulated for use in the most severe environments. FS TO-4 is formulated with the highest quality additives and synthetic ester base oils for maximum performance in heavy-duty equipment. The product is also an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant that is Biodegradable and has ultra-low toxicity. FS TO-4 is suitable for use in applications requiring TO-4 fluids as well as the obsolete TO-2 specification. Additional OEM applications are listed below. BioFlo FS TO-4 is available in SAE 10W, 30 and 50. Classified as Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EAL) as per the EPA's guidance document that defines standards for Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EPA 800-R-11-002) and as required by EPA's 2013 U.S. Vessel General Permit (VGP).

Is Synthetic Transmission Fluid Better?
Synthetic transmission fluid can be better in demanding applications because it is typically engineered for stronger temperature stability, oxidation resistance, lubricity, and long-term performance than many conventional fluids. In heavy equipment, those qualities can help protect transmissions, final drives, wet brakes, and drivetrain components operating under high load or harsh conditions.
However, “better” depends on the equipment and the required specification. The right transmission fluid must match the manufacturer’s recommended fluid type, viscosity grade, and performance requirements. For equipment that calls for a TO-4 fluid, a synthetic or fully synthetic TO-4 product may offer advantages in severe-duty environments, but it should only be used when it meets the applicable OEM requirements.
Hydraulic and drivetrain fluids also need the right viscosity, anti-wear performance, oxidation stability, thermal stability, foam resistance, and corrosion protection to support reliable operation.
Can I Add Synthetic Transmission Fluid to Regular?
You should not add synthetic transmission fluid to regular transmission fluid unless the fluids are compatible and approved for the same equipment specification. Mixing fluids can change viscosity, friction performance, additive balance, and overall protection, especially in transmissions, wet brakes, final drives, or hydraulic systems that depend on a specific fluid chemistry.
If you are switching from conventional to synthetic transmission fluid, the safest approach is to:
- Check the equipment manual for the required specification.
- Confirm both products meet the same OEM requirement.
- Ask the fluid manufacturer or equipment dealer about compatibility.
- Drain and replace the fluid when compatibility is uncertain.
For best performance, avoid topping off with a different fluid simply because it is synthetic. The specification matters more than the label.
