Thread Joint Compound

BioGrease TJC is a readily biodegradable thread and joint compound for drill pipe and other threaded connections. BioGrease TJC thread lubricant is formulated with high quality natural ester base oil and non-metallic solids, providing excellent protection against seizing and galling. This formula is also highly resistant to water washout and corrosion. It is easy to apply across a wide temperature range and is available in a pumpable version, BioGrease TJC 1. BioGrease TJC 2 and TJC 1 are certified as meeting the standards of NSF/ANSI/CAN 61: Drinking water system components and are free of PFA's (Polyfluoroalkyl substances). BioGrease TJC is a premium quality, non-toxic alternative to petroleum oil-based thread compounds, many of which contain a high percentage of metallic solids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Is Better, Teflon Tape or Thread Compound?

Teflon tape and thread compound both seal threaded connections, but thread compound is often the better choice for industrial, high-vibration, or high-pressure applications. Thread compounds fill gaps more completely, reduce galling, and remain effective even when fittings are adjusted after installation. BioGrease TJC provides sealing, lubrication, and corrosion protection in one product, making it ideal for demanding environments where tape can shred or loosen. BioGrease TJC has the added benefit of being NSF ANSI CAN 61 certified for use around potable water.

What Is a Thread Compound?

A thread compound is a paste or semi-solid material applied to threaded fasteners to seal against leaks, prevent seizing, and protect threads from corrosion. Unlike tape, thread compounds stay in place during assembly and disassembly. BioGrease TJC is a biobased thread compound designed to deliver reliable sealing while also supporting environmentally responsible operations.

Is Thread Compound the Same as Thread Sealant?

Thread compound and thread sealant are closely related, but not always identical. Thread sealants focus primarily on leak prevention, while thread compounds often combine sealing with lubrication and anti-seize properties. BioGrease TJC both seals threads and reduces friction, protecting against wear and corrosion.

What Happens If You Use Too Much Thread Sealant?

Using excessive thread sealant can cause material to squeeze into the system during assembly, potentially clogging valves, regulators, or fluid passages. Over-application can also make fittings harder to torque accurately. Applying a thin, even coating is the best practice for effective sealing without system contamination.

When Should You Not Use Thread Sealant?

Thread sealant should not be used on fittings that rely on metal-to-metal or mechanical seals, such as flare fittings or compression fittings. It’s also unnecessary on pre-coated fasteners or dry-seal threads designed to seal without additional material.
