Chain Saw and Bar & Chain Oil

BioBlend Bar & Chain Oil is a readily biodegradable chain saw bar and chain lubricant designed for chain saws used in forestry, landscaping and similar applications. Its excellent lubricity and temperature stability provide smooth mechanical performance and superior anti-wear protection while it's added tackiness minimizes sling loss. BioBlend Bar & Chain oil's readily biodegradable formula protects vegetation, wildlife and the environment, and is suitable for the lubrication of chain saws and similar wood cutting equipment in all ecologically sensitive environments.

BioBlend Bar & Chain oil is available in ISO grades 46 (BioBlend Bar & Chain Oil W) and 100. Grade 46 is preferred in colder conditions and grade 100 is preferred in warmer conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Oil Can Be Used as Bar and Chain Oil?

Bar and chain oil should be a tacky lubricant formulated specifically for chainsaw bars and chains. Unlike standard motor oil or general-purpose hydraulic oil, bar and chain oil is designed to cling to the chain as it moves at high speed, helping reduce friction, heat, wear, and premature bar damage.

In environmentally sensitive applications, a biodegradable bar and chain oil is often preferred, especially when working near soil, trees, waterways, or areas where oil loss is expected during normal operation. The right oil should provide strong lubricity, resist fling-off, and flow properly in the operating temperature range.

Always check the chainsaw manufacturer’s recommendations before switching oil types.

What Is Special About Bar and Chain Oil?

Bar and chain oil is special because it is made to resist flinging off of a fast-moving chain while protecting both the chain and guide bar from friction and wear. A chainsaw continuously loses oil during operation, so the lubricant needs to balance flow, adhesion, and protection.

The most important qualities of bar and chain oil include:

  • Tackiness to reduce fling-off
  • Lubricity to reduce friction and wear
  • Temperature stability for consistent flow
  • Bar and chain protection under high-speed operation
  • Environmental performance, especially when biodegradable oils are used

Because chainsaw oil is released during normal use, biodegradable bar and chain oil can be a better fit for forestry, landscaping, utility work, and other outdoor applications where lubricant may reach the environment.
