High Flash Point is the topic of our 6th edition of BioBlend’s eSynTM series of the high-performance characteristics you get with BioBlend’s renewable and sustainable lines of lubricants and industrial products. We have thus far covered four other powerful characteristics that are native to the natural and synthetic esters that make up all of the BioBlend eSynTM products including:
- High VI
- Great Lubricity
- High Polarity
- Superior Solvency
I recommend that you take a few moments to go back and check those previous posts out if you do not know the definitions and importance to performance each of the characteristics offer. At the very least you will be able to take a more informed approach to your continued and future lubricant decisions and purchases.
Now let’s dig into High Flash Point like that which you will find in our Factory Mutual approved fire resistant hydraulic fluid – BioFlo HFDU. If your equipment operates at very high temperature and/or there is the potential exposure to high temperature situations while in use, storage and transport, flash point should really be high on your list of important characteristics in your lubricants.
What is Flash Point?
Flash point is the lowest temperature at which the vapor above an oil will ignite or flash momentarily if/when an ignition source is passed over or exposed to it. Having a high flash point indicates you have a lower fire hazard when exposed to high temperature heat sources.
Why is a high flash point important?
Commence eye roll here and let out a big “Duh!”. When operating equipment at high temperatures a high flash point is important first and foremost for operator safety. Beyond the human cost of injury that could result from lubricant ignition, there are business costs including damage to equipment and facilities and subsequent effects of fires and/or explosions on your safety rating (affecting your insurance costs). If there are fire issues with your lubricants the downtime this creates is also an important cost that needs to be considered. So it is vital to your business to make sure the lubricants you are using can manage the temperatures within your operations.
BioBlend’s natural ester (plant) based lubricants have a naturally higher flash point than you typically find in petroleum-based products. You should always take the time to review and compare the properties of the lubricants you use against the operational needs of your equipment. Any time you are considering making a switch from one product to another or one brand to another it is important to take into consideration the typical properties of those lubricants and how they might affect the efficiency and safety of your work environment.
Featured Product (The eSynTM advantage)
Since we are looking at flash point this week we are going to focus on our aforementioned fire resistant hydraulic oil – BioFlo HFDU.
BioFlo Fire Resistant HFDU is made from premium quality, readily biodegradable natural ester. HFDU is an excellent anti-wear hydraulic fluid for use in all applications requiring a Factory Mutual approved fire resistant fluid. In addition to high performance, the product also provides excellent environmental performance due to its low toxicity additives and biobased base oil. HFDU is compatible with most mineral oils and polyolester type hydraulic fluids. For phosphate esters, please contact your BioBlend rep. HFDU is not compatible with water containing fluids.
