Naturally High Dielectric Strength With BioBlend Lubricants

Worker In Bucket Services Power LinesIn our 7th and final edition of the eSynTM characteristics series of BioBlend’s renewable and sustainable lubricants we are going to take a look at how the natural (Plant based) esters we use have a high dielectric strength when compared to most petroleum based products. This characteristic is the last one of six powerful performance and sometimes safety differentiators that set BioBlend’s lubricants apart from our conventional competition.

Those characteristics include:

  1. High VI
  2. Off the Charts Lubricity
  3. High Polarity
  4. Superior Solvency
  5. High Flash Point
  6. High Dielectric Strength

Taken individually each one of these characteristics can make a measurable difference in your operation’s performance but together you have a dominant blend for business success. Then top that off with the environmental benefits of being renewable, sustainable and biodegradable and you have a truly winning formula with BioBlend’s eSynTM lines. Let’s dive into dielectric strength and see how it really is an important attribute.

Do you operate in environments that can place you and your equipment in close proximity to dangerous high voltage equipment such as power lines, buried cables or transformers? These are just a few simple examples, as there are many more, but in every case you need to consider how your oils or fluids work to resist breaking down or becoming a dangerous conductor from the effects of electricity. You can do this by being sure to pay attention to the dielectric strength of your lubricants. BioBlend’s product have a high dielectric strength (BioFlo AWS >45 kV) because the plant based esters have naturally higher insulating properties than you typically see in petroleum based products. Let’s take a look at dielectric strength and why it’s important.

What is Dielectric Strength and Why it’s Important?

Dielectric strength is the measure of an oil’s ability to not conduct electricity as determined by the maximum voltage that a particular lubricant can handle without exhausting its insulating properties. High dielectric strength indicates some level of protection against electrical conductivity by a lubricant when used in or near an electrically charged operational environment. Additionally, high dielectric strength fluids can protect the integrity of your lubricants against breaking down due to the damaging effects of an electrical current flowing through them. This however requires you maintain clean fluids as contaminants such as water and wear metals can bring down the dielectric strength and actually work to make those fluids more conductive and destructive.

Friendly Reminder

In order to protect your operations and your employees who work with equipment that requires fluids with high dielectric strength such as bucket trucks, cherry-pickers, and transformers you need to take measures to ensure you are doing everything you can to maintain the reliability of those fluids. This means those fluids need to remain as free of debris and moisture as possible. To do this you need to make sure that all of the filters within the equipment remain functional and are replaced as needed. If your equipment does not have any in-system filtration you should definitely consider utilizing some sort of portable filtration such as a filter cart or hand-held unit on a regular rotation. Additionally, in the battle against moisture within the system you should consider desiccant breathers on the machinery if possible.

Featured product – BioFlo AWS Hydraulic Fluid

BioFlo AWS Hydraulic Fluids are semi-synthetic, readily biodegradable, zincfree, anti-wear hydraulic oils formulated from renewable base stocks to meet the performance requirements of mobile and industrial hydraulic systems. These high lubricity base oils are paired with environmentally friendly additive technologies to minimize ecological impact. These lubricants offer excellent thermal and oxidative stability, assuring superior service life with minimal viscosity change over a broad range of operating temperatures. They also exhibit a comparatively higher dielectric strength with a greater than 45 kV rating (ASTM D877). BioFlo AWS fluids are suitable for use in all conventional hydraulic systems, especially environmentally sensitive applications.
